S is for Smart!

Maybe today I'll look it up or maybe someone reading this will  know the answer. ( Of course, grannies know everything!)

My question is .... Are two year olds supposed to be able to recognize (and say) all the letters in the alphabet upper AND lower case? Are they supposed to spell their name? Brody does.

Brody will be three in September. When he is five he will miss the deadline to go to kindergarden and will still be in pre-school. At the rate he is learning things I am starting to wonder if he will be ready for High School when he hits the fifth grade!

Brody is a big book lover, like his Nana and his cousin Kenz. He will sit for long periods and study books. He has his favorites. I love reading to him because he loves listening. When I introduce a new book, he will eyeball the cover with suspicion. If he doesn't like it he tosses it aside. Toss is too gentle a word, he flings it away from him. No like it Nana, he says in a firm mad voice. (Smile) With all his letter savy he still has that great toddler sentence formation, although lately I have been hearing complete sentences, which I jot down in my head.

This one I love love love....

Yesterday I was backing out of my driveway after a five minute 'activity' of getting Brody in the carseat. I handed him the garage door clicker, as I always do for it's his JOB to push the button to close the door. After handing it back to me he exclaimed, "Look Nan! Carrots are on the tree."

What a wonderful sentence, but even more awesome was the association he made between the blooms and carrots.

I  know grandmas are supposed to brag, but I am not telling you about this because I want Brody to be ahead  of himself or impressive or any of those things we insisted  our own children be when they were two. I am simply pleased that he is such a delightful companion. I am glad he is using his brain to discover and  indulge this incredible world.

All the same Brody is a two-year old. I  never never put terrible in front of two. It can be said however, that Brody's cleverness and braininess is equal to his insistence and assertion on doing things his way. He can rule the world with his tantrums or (almost) ruin a trip to the store with his parents. Like a typical two, he will bite and kick and get mad one second, then be the sweetest person that ever lived the next.  Thankfully, his parents are wonderful and have a good system of setting boundaries and giving time-outs.

S..... is for super sweet simply stupendous smart and some other stuff in between

I think grandparents should be allowed to brag! In any case, he sounds precocious to me .. and very cute as well.

I'm thinking that B stands for Brilliant Brody!

Brody sounds as if he is far ahead of the curve! One of my friends has a similarly precocious child. She took him shopping the other day, and he was loudly sounding out a sign that said "shirts." Unfortunately, he left out the "r." LOL

Nana, My grandson started to recognize his upper and lower letters at 18 months and completed them in his second year also. Now he is 3 years and 3 months and can read lots of words although he still doesn't sit down and read a book word for word. Getting the sounds to match the recognition of the letters is the next step for your grandson, so when he recognizes a letter give him the sound that goes with it. Then he will start to connect to why letters are important in his life: letters + sounds = words/reading

I am glad I found your blog because I am so interested in reading about other grandmothers interacting with their grandchildren too. Mine are 3 and 1 and I take care of them during the week. I have done it since they were born and I absolutely love it! I can't wait to read more of your blog.

Connie,

Thanks for this blog post. My grandson, Zach will be two years old on June 5th. He has astounded me by knowing all the letters on the blocks we have. They are all uppercase and I haven't tried any lower case letters with him.

He also seems to have a strong interest in Dr. Seuss early books such as Hop on Pop and I won't be surprised if a year from now he knows some words on sight. Maybe even Zach.

I don't remember my own kids knowing letters this young and perhaps its related to educational TV. I don't know, but being a grandmother sure is fun.

I also blog at The Grandma Chronicles. Stop by. I am adding your blog to my blogroll.
